ProTorpedo — Guided Propeller Geometry Measurement

ProTorpedo is a desktop application for guided propeller geometry measurement. It combines rotary and linear encoder data, calculates pitch from Start/Stop measurements, guides operators across blades and radii, and generates structured PDF reports for analysis and traceability.

ProTorpedo — Guided Propeller Geometry Measurement

Overview

How the project was structured.

Problem

Propeller geometry measurement requires consistent data collection across multiple blades and radii. When sensor readings, blade and radius selection, measurement controls and result logging are distributed across separate technical steps, the workflow becomes harder for the operator to follow and increases the possibility of measurement errors. A clear interface is needed to keep the active measurement point, sensor status, live readings and results visible throughout the entire process.

Approach

We designed ProTorpedo around a simple guided Start/Stop measurement workflow. The operator selects the blade and target radius, positions the probe and starts a local measurement cycle. At Start, the current rotary and linear encoder values are stored as local reference values. During the measurement, the application continuously tracks the change in angle and height. At Stop, ProTorpedo calculates the resulting pitch, stores the measurement and guides the operator toward the next radius or blade.

This approach preserves the straightforward measurement logic of the reference system while integrating the complete workflow into a modern desktop interface.

Solution

The main measurement interface combines the propeller visualization, active blade and target radius, live encoder angle, sensor status, measurement state, delta values, measurement controls and a continuously available results table.

After completing the measurement sequence, the Analysis Review provides an overview of pitch values, deviations and blade-to-blade differences. ProTorpedo can then generate a structured PDF report containing session and propeller information, sensor and calibration data, analysis results, graphs, measured points, pitch samples and a final conclusion.

Impact

Project outcomes.

1. Guided Measurement Workflow

Step-by-step blade and radius guidance keeps the operator focused on the current measurement point and provides a consistent measurement sequence.

2. Traceable Measurement Data

Every measurement point can retain its blade and radius, start and end angle, start and end height, calculated deltas, pitch value and measurement status for later review.

3. Structured Digital Reporting

Measurement sessions can be transformed into a PDF report containing propeller information, calibration data, analysis results, graphs, measured points, pitch samples and a final conclusion.
